Historically known as 'Longosardo' or 'Longo Sardo', in Roman times Santa Teresa was a already a port of some notable importance on commercial trade routes for shipping the local granite to Rome. Given its position in the north of Sardinia, with the headlands of Capo Testa westwards and Punta Falcone eastwards, it was a crossroads for peoples and civilizations. Santa Teresa was built on the 12th of August 1808. This date is celebrated every year with evocative historical and folkloric performances.

Santa Teresa di Gallura is one of most popular tourist destinations in Sardinia. Amongst the roundish rocks of the Gallura, Santa Teresa offers more than the beauty of the beaches, such as tourist facilities and an entertainment programme. Rena Bianca beach is in the centre of the town, it is the most popular and lovliest beach. Hidden amongst the greenery are the old granite sheepfolds, previously used by shepherds, today they are exclusive summer lodges nestling in the Mediterranean scrub. The most stunning location on this part of the coast is Capo Testa head. From here the coastal path takes you further north to the Capo Testa lighthouse. The rocks here are incredible, the force of the breaking waves and the wind has smoothed them into extraordinary shapes. You can see the white cliffs of Bonifacio from Santa Teresa and there are regular daily ferries to and from Corsica.
